Baseball Arm Care: How Youth Pitchers Can Stay Strong All Season

Pitching is one of the most physically demanding actions in youth sports. The forces on a young pitcher's elbow and shoulder are significant — and most arm injuries are preventable.
Pitch Count Rules Exist for a Reason
Follow them. MLB's Pitch Smart guidelines set clear pitch count limits by age. No trophy is worth a UCL injury.
Warm Up Before You Throw
Never go from cold to throwing. A proper warm-up includes jogging, dynamic shoulder circles, band exercises, and a progressive long-toss build-up.
Band Exercises Are Your Best Friend
External rotations, internal rotations, face pulls, and Y-T-W exercises should be part of every pitcher's routine — before and after throwing.
Don't Throw Through Pain
If your arm hurts — not soreness, but pain — stop throwing immediately. Tell your coach and parents. Pain is your body's warning signal.
Young pitchers should take at least 3–4 months completely off from pitching each year. Top Shelf Athlete Co. believes in building athletes for long careers — starting with protecting their arms early.
