How to Build Explosive Power for Basketball: A Youth Athlete's Guide

In basketball, explosiveness is everything. It's the difference between getting to the rim and getting blocked, between staying in front of your defender and getting blown by.
What Is Explosive Power?
Explosive power is your ability to generate maximum force in minimum time. It shows up in your vertical jump, your first step, and your ability to change direction quickly.
Key Exercises for Young Ballers
Box jumps are a foundational plyometric. Stand in front of a sturdy box, dip slightly, and explode up with both feet. Land softly. Do 3 sets of 6–8 reps.
Broad jumps train horizontal power. Explode forward as far as you can and land on both feet with bent knees. Do 3 sets of 5 reps.
Single-leg Romanian deadlifts build the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back — which power your jump. Do 3 sets of 8 per side.
Don't Skip the Basics
Squats, lunges, and hip hinges are the foundation of all explosive movement. Form always comes before load.
Two explosive training sessions per week is plenty. At Top Shelf Athlete Co., we help young athletes train smarter and play at the top shelf.
