Off-Season Football Training: What Youth Players Should Focus On

The off-season is the most important time of year for serious youth football players. This is when you build the foundation that determines how good you'll be next season.
Strength First
Football is a collision sport, and strength is your armor. Focus on squats, deadlifts, bench press, rows, and overhead press. Build a strength base before anything else.
Speed and Agility
Every position benefits from speed. Incorporate sprint work, cone drills, and lateral agility training 2–3 times per week.
Skill Work
Position-specific skill work in the off-season separates good players from great ones. Even 20 minutes a day makes a massive difference over 4 months.
What to Avoid
Don't specialize too early. Don't play year-round without breaks. Young athletes need rest and time for their bodies to develop naturally.
Set Goals
Write down three things you want to improve before next season. Work backward and build a plan. At Top Shelf Athlete Co., we help athletes build exactly that kind of structure.
