Track & Field for Youth Athletes: Building Speed, Endurance, and Form

Track and field gets to the core of athleticism. For youth athletes, it's one of the best sports for developing raw physical qualities that carry over to every other sport.

Sprinters: Start With Acceleration

The first 10–30 meters are often where races are won or lost. Work on a low, aggressive start position and drive your knees forward in your first steps.

Distance Runners: Build Your Base First

Focus on easy aerobic mileage before adding speed work. Run at a conversational pace 4–5 days per week and build mileage slowly — no more than 10% per week.

Jumpers: Plyometrics Are Key

Long jumpers and high jumpers need explosive power and perfect approach mechanics. Add box jumps and single-leg hops to your training.

Throwers: Core and Rotational Power

Shot put, discus, and javelin require rotational power. Core training, hip mobility, and med ball throws are your best tools.

Recovery

Foam roll after every session. Sleep 8–9 hours. Distance runners need adequate carbohydrates to fuel training.

Top Shelf Athlete Co. is proud to support youth track athletes at every level.
