What to Eat After a Game: Recovery Nutrition for Youth Athletes

- 1 min read
The time immediately after a game is one of the most important windows for recovery — and nutrition plays a huge role in how fast you bounce back.
The Recovery Window
In the 30–60 minutes after intense exercise, your muscles are primed to absorb nutrients. Glycogen is depleted and muscle tissue needs repair. Feed it the right things and recovery accelerates.
What to Eat
The ideal post-game snack combines protein and carbohydrates in a 1:3 ratio. Great options: chocolate milk, a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread, Greek yogurt with fruit and granola, or rice and grilled chicken.
Don't Forget to Hydrate
For every pound lost during a game, drink 16–24 oz of water or sports drink to rehydrate.
What to Avoid
Skip fast food right after a game. High-fat, low-nutrient foods slow digestion and delay recovery.
